SH+O:  What is the quick pitch that defines your business?

Silver Queen Jewellery Australia: SQJ is another jewellery line from designer Annette Coleman.  Drawing on her success in the fashion industry, and natural creative flair designing houses and homewares, Annette has created a no frills silver jewellery line that is based on contemporary and easy priced designs.  Starting in 2009, SQJ was named Gate Uniques and the designs told stories and gave inspiration to the wearer.  Ethically sourced and made is important.  Annette designs for her own brands and others on commission using sterling silver and semi-precious stones that she hand selects herself according to beauty and energy.

SH+O:  Where do you find inspiration?

SQJ:  In the most crazy places!  I am a spontaneous designer and can spend a day pumping out designs for 12 months and have writers block for weeks on end!  However, when working on commission designs for charities and corporates around the world, I find if I focus, images form in my mind – they kind of ferment there for a bit and the design then “pops” out!  I can’t really say I find inspiration in nature or travel, as my brain is equal left and right, so ideas happen all the time!

SH+O:  What was your biggest challenge when starting your business and how did you overcome it?

SQJ:  Finding reliable manufacturers who understood deadlines and the importance I place on top quality.

SH+O:  What was your best business moment?

SQJ:  With my previous fashion business, I won many design and business awards – they were all very exciting.  Now, my best business moment comes every day when someone wears my designs!

SH+O:  Where do you see the future of retail heading?

SQJ:  Retail stores over online for sure!  I think stocking stores around the globe who align with our thinking (ethical, high end and original) is more important that being the biggest supplier of something.  Retail allows relationships to blossom.  Online seems to be much more removed and we need to talk about  unemotional things like freight and insurance with our customers – that never comes into a retail sale at customer level – it’s a sale of elegance and care.  We can try to do that online, but it’s quite a big ask to replicate that.
