SH+O: What is the quick pitch that defines your business?
EmKo: We offer the most creative emerging cards from NZ and the UK. Our aim is to bring the talents of artists and illustrators to consumers whilst sharing the love and happiness of sending a personal message.
SH+O: Where do you find inspiration?
EmKo: To be honest, it's in the everyday. We live in such a beautiful country, my best ideas come to me when I slow down and take the time to observe life. I also write everything down and keep little knick knacks that I find when I am out and about, a quote, something
I hear, a particular image that resonates with me. It might trigger a good idea, or it may lead to nothing but having it on paper keeps me focussed and inspired to keep going
SH+O: What was your biggest challenge when starting your business and how did you overcome it?
EmKo: Transitioning from being a designer and wholesaler with The Little Card Factory, to becoming EmKo and taking responsibility for other artists work as well as my own. It was terrifying and I had a constant 'what if it fails' fear before the initial launch. I just had
to trust my instincts and have faith in my own choices. I strongly believe that life is too short to hold back for fear of failing. Take the leap and learn lessons along the way.
SH+O: What was your best business moment?
EmKo: Seeing our first card spinner in a store was a huge milestone for me. It gave me a huge sense of pride and I felt like all the hard work our team had put in was worth it.
SH+O: Where do you see the future of retail heading?
EmKo:I feel like the retail sector is coming full circle to where the consumer is more intimately involved in their purchases and the products creation and story. There is much more of a focus on 'Buy Less, Choose Well' again which is really lovely to see.
