A Conversation With...

We're excited to launch our "Conversation With..." Series.

Here at Source Home + Object we are very fortunate to have access to some to some great people - retailers, designers, stylist, blogger and our exhibitors. These are the people who decide what's cool, what ends up in your favourite interiors magazine and ultimately, in your living room.

So lets's ask them what makes them tick, how they got to where they are and what sets them apart.

For our first Conversation, we sit down with the lovely Mel Chesneau from Styled Canvas

Let us know who you would like us to talk to here.

A Conversation With...Mel Chesneau, Styled Canvas

How do you make your online space stand out?

I just recently went through a rebranding and made the site more airy, with larger images and more interactive for the reader. I'm also very selective with the quality of the images I use and even though I may find a fantastic new store or product to write about, if the images on offer aren't great, or I don't have the opportunity to style or photograph myself, I won't publish it. As far as promotion on the web, I mainly use social media.

Describe your reader:

Mainly female, are well travelled and enjoy good food and wine.

They follow trends but are never a slave or victim to it. They embrace differences in cultures, styles, lifestyles and design. They are house-proud and they'd mix high end with mainstream. If finances allowed, they'd put something like an Arne Jacobsen AJ table lamp on a vintage table, B&B Italia bookshelf with curios, statues and handmade ceramics alongside the book collection.

Are there any rules or habits that help you do your job more efficiently?

Planning is definitely key. I keep a spreadsheet of the coming months and make sure that I have a plan of what I intend to post for at least the month ahead. Sometimes things pop up and I post it immediately and reshuffle, but generally I stick to a plan. I'd be lost without it.

When thinking about new features for your online space, where do you look for inspiration?

Pinterest is a big one. It's the fastest way to spot a trend and discover new talent. Instagram is also good to see what real people are doing. I've also noted the upcoming Source Home & Object tradeshow. That will be a great way for me to see what's available and relevant here in NZ.

Who or what are you inspired by right now?

My new home will certainly keep me inspired for a while as I pull it together. Mostly the people that inspire me are those that have their own personal signature style.

Thanks Mel, for taking the time to chat with us. We can't wait to see your new home and all that you do with it!
