SH+O: Where did the idea for your business come from?
We started a little over 10 years ago, and we owned a retail store in the centre of Melbourne. We found it really hard to find the decent stationery brands that you would see when you travelled to Europe. So we set about bringing those brands to AU/NZ
SH+O: Where are you based
SHO+O: Do you ever work from home? How does that impact your life?
Only occasionally, but usually when I really need to concentrate on something. I can focus at home without interruption
SH+O: Where do you look for inspiration?
OH, everywhere! Well in our business I travel a fair bit, so I always get out and about in a new city and explore the sights and retail spaces. I find it really energising to be dropped into a different culture!
SH+O: Best piece of advice you’ve been given
Less is more
SH+O: How do you start your day?
I start my working days with either a good gym or pilates session…. a healthy breakfast and coffee. I like to be at my desk around 8am
SH+O: How do you end your day?
I’m fortunate enough to be able to cycle to our office in Collingwood, so I stop off and take my dog Kirby to the park. It’s a great way to create some space between work and home time.
SH+O: How do you switch off from work? Can you?
As above…. and I think it’s really important to switch your mind to something else whether it be exercise, time with family and friends or a hobby like cooking. I think you’re a better manager when you’re able to seperate from work
SH+O: How do you combine business with creativity? In my role I manage all aspects of our business, which includes both creative and finance/operational areas. I really like working across both commercial and creative aspects, it’s a good challenge
SH+O: What is your creative process?
Generally I like to work through a number of phases - inspiration, clarification with the team, distill the ideas, perspiration - visualise and work the ideas , evaluation and incubation.
SH+O: How do you plan the year ahead for your business?
We work on a 3 year strategic plan, and then also a financial year budget and strategy.
SH+O: Are you strategic in business?
I have to be all the time! My role as Director requires me to be strategic most of the time.· Hardest business lesson you’ve learntNot not take on too much as you’ll never do anything very well then. It’s easy to say yes
SH+O: How does Source help your business? The Source is our sales team and support in New Zealand. They do a great job for us, from sales, service, warehousing and dispatch.
SH+O: What do you expect when you visit Source?
Bubbles and a laugh!
