5 Minutes With...Kristy from Maison Blanche

SH+O:  Where did the idea for your business come from?

From a love of candles, and the want to find the perfect vanilla bean candle using natural, non toxic ingredients- that was minimal and stylish. From there, Maison Blanche was born.

SH+O:  Where are you based?

Based in Sydney, Australia. We sell online, but focus more on supply to our wonderful stockists worldwide.

SH+O:  Do you work from home?  

The Maison Blanche factory & offices are 5 mins from my home. When I first started Maison Blanche, I was working out of a spare room in my apartment- to have a dedicated office space makes it a lot easier to have a clear separation between work and personal life. 

SH+O:  Where do you look for inspiration?

For fragrance, travel is my biggest inspiration. Trying to capture a memory or experience in a fragrance is a lot easier when you are immersed within it. For design, galleys and museums always activate my creativity and motivate me to create.  

SH+O:  Best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Head up, keep going. 

SH+O:  How do you start your day?

My amazing partner wakes me up at 6am with a coffee in bed and lets our dogs and cat in for a cuddle. While he gets ready for work, I go over my to-do list for the day in bed.

SH+O:  How do you end your day?

I try to turn my phone and computer off at 7.30pm each night. I make sure to carve some time out each night to relax and spend time with my partner- even if it is just watching a movie together. 

SH+O:  How do you switch off from work?  Can you?

I don’t think I ever really switch off, but the closest I get is what is going swimming with my 2 pugs at the beach.

SH+O:  Are you strategic in business?

I try to be, and would like to be better at being strategic, but I lead with my heart and I focus more on the creative side of the business. I have the faith that if I create the best possible product I can, the business success will happen. 

SH+O:  Hardest business lesson you’ve learnt

Trust your gut. All the bad decisions I’ve made in business could have been avoided if I trusted my initial impression of the situation/ person / deal and said no, instead of going along with it because others think I’m being overly cautious.
